H&A Architects & Engineers Earns Outstanding Plan Award for Pembroke Strategic Growth Area Plan
Virginia design firm, H&A Architects & Engineers, recently received the Outstanding Plan Award from the American Planning Association, Virginia Chapter (APA VA), for its strategic growth area plan for Pembroke in Virginia Beach.
With a commitment to social vitality and environmental stewardship, the plan was designed to unite and define the ever-growing tourist city. The district is part of a larger initiative to move beyond the city’s auto-centric lifestyle, toward a mixed-use urban downtown.
The Pembroke SGA 4 Implementation Plan incorporated six basic development principles and identities, including:
- Efficient use of land resources
- Full use of urban services
- Compatible mix of uses
- Transportation opportunities
- Detailed human scale design; and
- Environmental stewardship.
The awards committee was impressed with the scale of the suburban retrofit and found the model to be highly applicable to many other localities.
